What Is the Breast Augmentation Procedure Like?

Breast augmentation, also called augmentation mammoplasty, is an enhancement surgery that adds volume and shape to the breasts using implants. This procedure is done with general anesthesia. An incision is made, and the implant of your choice is inserted and positioned within the breast pocket. The incisions are then carefully closed.

What Are My Breast Implant Options?

In order to achieve your ideal bust, you will choose from the following options for your implants:

Material

Breast implants are made with a silicone shell and can be filled with one of the following materials:

  • Silicone: Silicone implants are filled with a cohesive silicone gel and are popular because they closely resemble the look and feel of natural breast tissue. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes and tend to be lighter than saline implants. These implants are less prone to leaks, rupture, and rippling; however, they do require a larger incision in order to be inserted.
  • Saline: Saline implants are filled with a sterile saltwater solution. These implants have a rounder shape and are firmer than natural breast tissue. Unlike silicone implants, saline implants are filled after the silicone shell is inserted. This method allows for better positioning and symmetry as well as much smaller incisions.

Shape

Implant shape will have an effect on the projection of the bust as well as the contours of the breasts. We offer round, spherical implants that provide more fullness in the upper breast.

Where Will My Implants Be Placed?

Implants can be placed either above or below your pectoral muscle.

  • Submuscular: The implant is placed under the pectoral muscle. This method may be ideal for women with thin breast tissue. It produces a more natural look, but surgery and recovery may take longer.
  • Subglandular: The implant is placed between the breast tissue and the chest muscle. This method may be better for women who enjoy body sculpting through exercise. The surgery and recovery can be shorter, but the implants may be more prone to rippling.

Where Will My Breast Augmentation Incisions Be Made?

There are also different options for incision placement. Incisions can be made in one of the following locations:

  • Inframammary: The fold underneath the breast that connects your breast to your ribcage is called in inframammary fold. An incision can be made along this crease in order to insert the implant. This method is often preferred because it reduces the chances of post-operative complications and offers easier concealment of scars.
  • Periareolar: With this method, the incision is made around the upper portion of the areola. The scar is mostly hidden by the dark pigment at the edge of the areola and fades over time.
  • Transaxillary: An incision is made in the armpit, and the implant is tunneled through and positioned within the breast pocket. The implant is then filled once it is in the proper position. This option is popular for those concerned about scarring, as the scar is in the armpit and easily concealed.
