Whether it’s because of constant bombardments of unkind remarks, upcoming school dances, or college interviews, adolescents feel the need to look great. To do so, with the permission of their parent or guardian, some teens turn to cosmetic surgery. In 2012, there were over 130,500 cosmetic procedures performed on individuals 18 years old and under. Although this number has slightly decreased from the past few years, teens still show a consistent desire to undergo plastic surgery. Of the cosmetic procedures that teenagers undergo every year, the following are some of most popular, according to The American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS).
Otoplasty
Also known as “ear surgery,” otoplasty was the most commonly performed procedure in 2012 for individuals under 18. Typically, otoplasty is performed when children are around 5 or 6 years old to pin back protruding ears before their life of education begins.
Rhinoplasty
Often referred to as “nose enhancement surgery,” rhinoplasty cannot be performed until the nose is fully grown. This usually occurs between 13-16 years of the age, around the time that many adolescents become most self-conscious about their physical appearance.
Breast Reduction & Gynecomastia Surgery
Overly large breasts is a common occurrence that affects teenage girls, both physically and mentally. The exact age of full breast development varies, but breast reduction surgery is usually performed when physical activities become difficult or back, neck, and/or shoulder pain exists due to the large size of the breasts.
Boys can also experience abnormally large breasts. This condition is called gynecomastia, and it can affect young men emotionally, and cause them to be less sociable. Through male breast reduction surgery, excess glandular tissue can be removed to reveal a more contoured chest.
Acne Treatment
Just about every teenager has a bout with acne during his or her adolescent career. Unfortunately for some girls and boys, their acne seems to persist or leave permanent scars behind once it clears up. A variety of cosmetic treatments, including laser skin resurfacing, can reduce the prevalence of acne and eliminate unsightly scarring.
At Weston Cosmetic Surgery Center, we offer all of the above procedures and treatments to help patients of all ages improve their physical appearance and well-being.
