Many who are unsatisfied with their appearance may be considering plastic surgery. One of the most commonly requested procedures among women is breast augmentation. This isn’t surprising, as the appearance of the breasts is very important to women.
The breasts can define a woman and represent her femininity. When she does not feel confident because of her breasts, changing them through surgery can help boost her confidence and allow her to feel better about herself. Many women who are in their 40s, 50s, and 60s may feel as if breast augmentation is only an option for younger females, and they may wonder if there is such a thing as being too old for breast augmentation.
Making Sure You’re Healthy Before Breast Augmentation
Any women can undergo breast augmentation surgery as long as she is physically healthy. When determining candidacy for any plastic surgery procedure, health is ultimately the deciding factor, not age. Your surgeon can help you determine if you are healthy enough for surgery and if your body can physically handle the stress of surgery.
The Breast Augmentation Consultation
During your consultation, you should be honest and open about your present physical state as well as your medical history. The best patients are fully educated about their elective procedure. Ask as many questions as possible and make sure that all of your concerns are addressed. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons has provided a list of questions to ask your breast augmentation surgeon. Patients should be physically healthy and mentally healthy as well. They should be realistic about their expectations and sure they want to undergo the procedure for themselves. Dr. Messa will go over your different breast augmentation options, including breast implant type (saline or silicone), incision options (breast crease, armpit, or areola), and implant placement (over or under the pectoral muscle).
Before the Procedure
Once you have your surgery date confirmed, it is time to prepare for your procedure. Before surgery, you should have blood work done to confirm you do not have any pre-existing conditions. Older patients should undergo a full cancer screening. Certain medications, herbal supplements, and anti-inflammatory drugs should be avoided for a few weeks before surgery. Patients should refrain from smoking for at least two weeks before and two weeks after surgery.
