7 Tips to Help You Lose Weight Before Your Tummy Tuck

Being near your ideal, healthy weight is essential before undergoing a body contouring procedure such as a tummy tuck. While we understand that you may be quite eager to get rid of that bulging belly fat and unwanted excess skin, it is important not to jump the gun.

Patients are advised to be within 15 to 20 pounds of their ideal weight before moving forward with the surgery. Being at a healthy, stable weight increases the chances of achieving the most optimal results.

Every patient wants to maintain their slender, tighter abdominal appearance. Undergoing a tummy tuck surgery then subsequently losing additional weight can diminish the contouring results achieved through surgery, causing you to invest in a revision procedure to restore the initial benefits. To avoid all this, it is best to wait until your weight is healthy and maintainable.

Here are a few tips to help you lose those last few pounds.

1. Regular Exercise

To shed weight in a reasonable amount of time, exercise has to be part of the equation. Engage in more cardiovascular and muscle-building activities and stay consistent.

2. Watch Your Diet

Paying attention to your portions and what’s included in your meals also counts. The healthiest way to lose weight is to be on a caloric deficit through sustainable changes that help you shed weight gradually. Often, it is healthiest to stay away from restrictive fad diets.

3. Improve Your Nutrition

Good nutrition should be a way of life. Consider limiting carbohydrates and focus on lean proteins, and incorporating more vegetables and fruits into your diet.

4. Avoid Alcohol and Processed Foods

These often contain high calories and excess sugar, so it only makes sense to avoid or minimize them.

5. Get Enough Sleep

Being on a good sleep schedule is a great way to encourage weight loss. This way, you will feel well-rested and ready to pursue your weight loss goals.

6. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

Sometimes what you think is a hunger pang is an unquenched thirst. So drink up that water, keeping it up to 10 to 15 glasses a day.

7. Start to Prepare Ahead of Time

It is important that you give yourself enough time to lose weight in a meaningful manner. This could be anywhere between six to eight months before surgery or less, depending on your weight loss goals. 

Additionally, it helps to walk this journey with the support of your friends and close support system, so it doesn’t hurt to speak to them.
