We often feel completely refreshed, rejuvenated, and happy after certain events in life like summer vacation, the birth of a child, or the holidays. Unfortunately, many people also find unwanted fat in unexpected places after these occasions. Dr. Messa offers various facial procedures that can remove fat from the cheeks, abdomen, thighs, and other areas, and place it in the areas of the face where you need it most.
When a Lack of Facial Fat Accelerates Aging
A study performed a few years ago compared the appearance of several sets of older twins, with one twin weighing less than the other in each set. The results showed that in every case of twins over 40, the twin with less facial fat appeared older than the heavier twin. While there are many factors to consider when evaluating how old a person looks, thinner people generally tend to appear older than heavier people, especially when the excess weight of the heavier people is apparent in the face. For those who have fine lines and wrinkles, dark circles or “hollows” beneath the eyes, and deep folds around the mouth, Dr. Messa recommends facial fat transfer. This procedure removes a small amount of fat from a “problem area” like the abdomen, thighs, or hips using liposuction. The fat is then purified and injected into the face to fill out unwanted wrinkles and hollow areas and to plump the cheeks or lips to provide the most youthful appearance.
When Facial Fat Becomes Displaced
Over time, facial fat can significantly age a person when it becomes displaced due to the natural aging process. Youthful fat that rests on the cheekbones can slowly descend, leading to bags beneath the eyes and sagging jowls. These concerns can be addressed with one of Dr. Messa’s advanced facelift techniques. Depending on the patient’s desires, he or she can choose a mini facelift or a full facelift, which can also dramatically improve the appearance of the neck.
